Miss Kittin Talks WetYourSelf With Timeout

TimeOut magazine got together with Miss Kittin and asked her opinions on the Wetyourself relaunch and asked Her Top Tips for surviving club mayhem..

Miss Kittin Q’s

TIMEOUT: You’re very picky about the cub nights you play – what attracted you to WYS?

I met Cormac through Jojo de Freq, one of my favorite Dj in London. He started his parties in Aquarium and for fun, I decided to try.

It’s important for me to play in small underground parties because that’s where new trends raise, it keeps me fresh and updated, and mostly, it’s a lot of fun.

TIMEOUT:The promoters said that first date you played there really made the club – do you have fond memories of it – can you remember any highlights from your set?

Oh, I don’t think it made the club, it was there already and that’s why I wanted to be part of it, but it probably helped people who didn’t know that night to come and see. I remember the queue at the door, and at first, I was a bit scared cos if a party becomes victim of its success, it can kill the original vibe. WYS tryied to keep it under control but it went a bit mad. I wanted to dance after my set but I couldn’t, it was too packed!

TIMEOUT: Were you pleased to be asked to kick off their residency at Fabric?

It’s a great sign of destiny. To be honest, I was super happy and excited about this news, because it means the party deserved a bigger location.
Most of all, I haven’t played at Fabric for a very long time, by choice, to focus on Bugged Out at The End, so it’s perfect way to come back there. I couldn’t dream of a better excuse!

TIMEOUT: Do you think the WYS crowd is particularly different to that at other London club nights?

I don’t know so well the other crowds besides big clubs. I am always hungry to discover smaller week nights, not only as a DJ but also as a customer cos it’s a great platform for new sounds and new talents. When Jojo recommended me Aquarium, I didn’t know what to expect besides our common friends, quite crazy already, and the very up to date young crowd. But I was surprised by the mixture of nationalities, vivid fashion styles and simply happy people. It reminded me of my early rave years. On sundays, you can only get the passionate  clubbers, but also people who want to avoid the week end madness.

TIMEOUT: Are you a fan of Sunday clubbing?

Not really, I am always too tired coming back from traveling. I enjoy my sofa and take away food most of the time! That’s why it makes it even more special to me! But you can change time, depends how you see it, and it’s quite fun to imagine it being your own Saturday night.

TIMEOUT: Do you think the WYS promoters will manage to keep the underground vibe alive at a big club like Fabric?

Let’s see. It can surely grown into a reference place to party in London. I hope they keep their identity as much as they can, and when you know them, you easily believe they can. But it would be quite unfair at the same time to close the doors if it gets too popular… It’s a hard thin line to deal with, party after party.

TIMEOUT: Who’s your favourite out of Cormac, Jacob and Peter?

I love Peter for his glasses without glass and sticker on the side. He doesn’t wear them anymore but he knows what I mean : ) I also have to thank Cormac for being such a great private  yoga teacher when I recorded my album.

TIMEOUT: Do you think they’ll manage to attract the same hedonistic crowd at fabric as they did at the Aquarium?

For sure. If it can push back people to dress up and party friendly, I will be happy.

TIMEOUT: Any surprises in store for your February 8 set?

Not yet, but a month later, the second Miss Kittin and the Hacker album simply called “Two”.

TIMEOUT: Did you ever dive in the pool at the Aquarium, or witness wild events going on there?

I spied thru the window, but it didn’t really look glamorous. I always found it a bit filthy to be honest!

TIMEOUT: How long have you managed to stay awake for in one go?

Hmmm… Maybe 2 days… only… Back then in mid 90’s, big rave times… But I am useless without sleep in general!

TIMEOUT: What’s your best advice to people trying to stay in good enough shape to make it to a Sunday clubnight?

I know it’s hard but so far, the best is not to drink… You can do everything else if you drink water, juices etc…
Also I would go out on Thursdays or Fridays and avoid Saturdays, always too busy for me as a clubber.

TIMEOUT:
Now I need to ask you about some clubbing clichés and how best to avoid  them. The idea being that Wetyourself is a really ‘anti-cliché’ night. – would be great to get some tips from you to help our readers out in future.

1. How do you avoid having to buy crumbly pills from a sweaty Spaniard at 5am (outside the toilets)

I would get my own from friends I trust before the night, not to have to deal with that stress at the party!

2. Tips to avoid falling asleep on the night bus and waking to find your wallet has been stolen

No wallet. Money in your pockets! No purse for the girls. Just a good jackets with big pockets!

3. How to cope when you think you’ve lost your cloakroom ticket and where to look.

This one happened to me after a foam party at Queen in Paris when I was 17… Leave with your friends and come back to Fabric the next day,
they have an efficient “lost and found” office.

4. How to avoid ending up at the 333/Mother Bar when you swore you’d never go there again Ask your friends to take you home before you surrender, or simply go there, enjoy the party and tell yourself to never say never again!

6. What to do when you’ve double-dropped and are lying at home buzzing in bed.

Breathe soflty, think about something nice, holidays when you were kid, your favorite landscape. Or ask your partner for deep massage!

7. What to do when you’ve been raving in a neon lycra jumpsuit and forget about the sweat marks…

Who cares about sweat marks at a rave party!

8. How to blag your way into a party when things going badly?

I hate this one… Focus on somebody nice, or find your spot and don’t move, or make your way home!

10. Have you ever taken up smoking to chat up the clubber you fancy

No. There’s better substances to do that!

11. Having your stash melt after being concealed in an ‘intimate’ location

Never go to intimate locations with strangers, parents told.

12. how to avoid going home covered in UFI’s (unidentified fucked injuries)

Can’t guarantee that.

13. How to get rid off a load of pot-bellied thirty-something scene veterans clogging up the bar in united lamenting: ‘it’s gone commercial’.

Choose your friends! And ask them to kill you before you become one of these…

XXX.
